When your highlighter is beginning to dry out, you may consider licking it to encourage the ink. DON'T DO THIS.
Related note: Don't use your highlighter(s) in a steamy bath/shower (I was out of books to read so I decided to work on annotating WoF). It will have the same effect.
This is the effect (on The Hidden Kingdom):
It will dry it out more!!! Not sure why? But it will so just, you know, don't do it.
The pink and orange ones are not dry; the green and yellow are the dry ones.

There is green on just about the whole right page, and "this dead stuffed crocodile with bat wings sewn on its back so it looked sort of like a dragon" on the left page is highlighted in yellow.
