I'm so Sorry!! Today we'll Discuss Underscales.

Underscales... Does that mean:
 Or:
Like a dog's undercoat.
Now we have convincing evidence of this, and even though it doesn't support my idea (at least, not overtly [vocab word!])  {Oh on an unrelated note, have you seen this yet????? It's the BEST!}, I'm going to share it with you. SPOILER WARNING: This is from Winter Turning, though it's a minor detail.
(Edit Jan 2017: the vid is not available D8 but what was it? what vid was it???)

A young RainWing dragonet is imitating Qibli. "She spread her wings and studied the underside of them, then reached out and poked Qibli until he opened his wings for to examine.
            "'Hrm,' she said. A shimmer of gold and bronze appeared on her chest, and then slowly melted into a color that almost exactly matched Qibli's underscales," (pg 72-73).
This could prove that the underscales means the underbelly... But it could just be that the underbelly just has underscales, even though they're over the whole body... Whaddayou think?
UPDATE (from like 10 minutes later): I do actually have a quote!!! I went into the archives (vids on my 'puter) and found this beauty:
{Penguin is drinking kale juice which tastes like pineapple}
Me: "Could you move your glass?" [I get a little bit of a funny look on my face]
{camera turns to look at Penguin who's holding the bottle of kale juice and a glass of green water}
Pen: "Green water, green juice, green water, green juice" [she lifts each up in turn]
{oh also she was just getting over a cold so her voice is all squeaky and broken which adds to the hilarity}
Me: "Mix 'em up together and see--"
Penguin: "NO-o!!"

  1. I think underscales are like the undercoat on a dog- and they are on most of the body (Belly, back, thighs; not so much on neck and tail). I'm not sure about wings. Probably not, because they have to be not too heavy.

  2. Yeah, I personally think that too, and the belly only has underscales, which is why the belly is softer and easier to scratch. Maybe the wings are just underscales too? Or the wing frames have normal scales only and the wing membranes are just skin?
