My assignment for big history:
"Write a first-person account, with at least 5 separate diary entries, describing the early earth as if you just walked out of a time machine onto it's unstable molten surface (you Whovians can treat this assignment as if you are The Doctor's companion). What kind of dangers abound? How do you deal with them? Has the asteroid strike occurred that will create the moon? Does that loom near? You make the call."
So here's my response.
Why can I create 7+ characters on the spot, just by names, to make a throwaway home"fun" assignment but I still don't have any characters in mind for that other book idea i have?
Note, this is a mission back in time to "the early earth", and it does involve Lava, as well as implied death from heat/melting.
Genesis Mission I report:
August 11, 2044
When the vehicle landed, it melted on impact. Improvement is needed.
Genesis Mission II report:
June 30, 2045
We went to a later time period and used a tantalum hafnium carbide coating on a body made from tungsten and carbon alloys, as well as a thick layer of lead to protect against radiation. With a different atmosphere, there will be far less protection from radiation, and there might be less pressure, so we used the best refractory materials we could to protect against the heat.
5:49 6/28/2045
Tantalum hafnium carbide coating on the vehicle protected it well. Internal cooling devices were overworked-- Next time use more machines and larger fuel tanks.
The view was stunning -- for a molten wasteland. It was mostly a red and brown color scheme, and the air samples--once cooled-- confirmed the theory of an "atmosphere" of vaporized dust.
At last contact, the machinery was overheating and the return mechanisms weren't responding. Use better refractories in return mechanism, test more thoroughly, and improve cooling systems.

When Capt. Reynolds first called me to be a time traveler, it was the best moment of my life. It was such a good change from the melancholy of the last few years without my wife, Jennifer. It was like a bullet in my heart when Sgt. Du Bois told me that Genesis Mission I had failed. I knew when Capt. Reynolds approached me about GMIII that I would follow in her footsteps to explore the Early Earth. I hope she's proud of--- SHRAM KUYHTGISUHVFNI THIS IS THE INSTANT COMMUNICATIONS COMPUTER ughhghghhh juhyynyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. The journey's going great guys. I'm glad you decided to send someone out as Comm Sergeant --- aH CRUMPETS THERE'S AN ASTEROID --- HELP WE'RE IN PATH OF GIANT LAVE AVE --- HOW STRONG IS THIS ALLOY? OH MY GOSH --- OH GOSH WER'E GONNA DIW. TELL WENDA AN FRIEDA AND PHILLIP JONNY LOVS THM N HOPS WHETER THY STYA TOGEHTR OR NT TEY ALL REMBER HIM -- - JOANNE SAYS TO WRITE ON THEIR GARVE "SO LONG SUCKERS, AT LEST I DIDE IN A WAV OF LAVAE" -- OH MY GOSH ITS COMIG -- wait guys over their -- that -- is that the MOON? oh my gosh... GUYS WE JUST SAW THE MOON
THE MOON WE SAW THE MOON BEING MADE-- we're tryn to get the return mechanism running -- i'm going to help joanne with the levrs we'll be back soon--
In memory of Mrs. Avery Glanton, Mx. Joanne Liptak, and Mx. Jonjamin Ropiequet. From what we can gather from the technical data transmitted minutely from the vessel, the return mechanisms malfunctioned once again. Set up backup return mechanisms in next vehicle. Cooling system updates worked well.
Genesis Mission IV
October 12, 2049
We sent Senior astronaut Gillian Ripley along with Communications specialist Roy Patrik Julius Parks and Janaína Linhares Vargas, PhD, geologist specializing in geology at high temperatures.
10:07 10/9/2049
The earth's crust seems half formed. We can't walk on it, but we tested it and it seems solid. Still using hover tech, not landing, but we took some surface samples (just for you, Du Bois). Gillian says it looks like Venus.
Atmospheric temperature seems to be somewhere around 250°C.
Cooling devices running well and fuel levels are good. We have oxygen for two days max. We will plan to head back home in 12 hours.
11:52 10/9/2049
It's raining. Janaína is collecting a rain sample for you.
13:27 10/9/2049
Surface sample examination came back-- Seems to be a basaltic crust with a low level of magnesium.
There's a valley in the crust nearby and it's filling up with the rain. It may be an early ocean.
4:34 10/10/2049
Rain sample analysis complete: water with dissolved carbon dioxide. Slightly acidic. Fuel tanks 1/3 full. Heading home early to be safe.
"It was the most amazing thing I've ever experienced," said chrononaut Janaína Linhares Vargas. "You look outside and it's just -- hot, semi-formed crust as far as you can see. The weirdest thing was watching the rain. It seemed like such an earth thing, happening on this strange Venus-like planet, and it's like, 'I live here?' And it is, that's the earth, and it's trippy to think of how it got from that to this."
This mission provides great insight to our search to understand the origin of the earth.
